Hunting Lesson

[Wolfy//June]

A purr rumbled deep in Wolfstar's throat and he slowly demonstrated what she had said. Once he reached the ground, he meowed, "Correct. You want to make sure you have a solid grip, otherwise you could trip and fall, which would defeat the purpose of going down that way." Wolfstar looked at Birdpaw. "Demonstrate a hunting stalk and one of you-" he meowed, looking at Gladepaw and Sprucepaw, " will guess which stalk she is doing."

[Birdsong]

Birdpaw quickly sunk into the proper hunting crouch for a mouse and glided stealthily across the ground. She was careful to keep her weight on her haunches so that if a mouse was actually around he wouldn't sense her. She glanced at Wolfstar to see if she was doing all right.

[Spruceburn]

Sprucepaw rolled his eyes at his dad, though he didn't really care. He knew he was going to get it wrong anyway. He couldn't help glaring at his sister when Wolfstar let out an approving purr, Suck up... He thought moodily to himself. Sprucepaw watched as Birdpaw sunk into the perfect position to catch a mouse, Ha! I know this one! He thought triumphantly to himself.

"Well?" Wolfstar asked Sprucepaw. "Which one is it?" the tom wasn't sure if Sprucepaw had been getting the questions wrong on purpose or if he was just inattentive.

[Spruceburn]

Sprucepaw cocked his head to one side, as if he were seriously considering the answer. If you won't be proud of me for no reason, I'll give you a reason to be ashamed! He thought angrily to himself. '' Um... Is it the position to hunt birds? '' he asked, looking up at his father with innocent green eyes.

[Birdsong]

Birdpaw immediately felt alarmed. Wasn't I stalking for a mouse? She mentally checked her positioning and realized that she was correct, she was in the proper stalking position for a mouse. Then why had Sprucepaw asked about birds? Glancing over at him, Birdpaw wondered if he was just saying that to tick Wolfstar off. Catching sight of his expression, she saw how innocent it was. Too innocent. So he was just trying to annoy Wolfstar. Birdpaw swallowed and turned her green eyes on her leader, wondering how he'd react.

Wolfstar resisted the urge to fling Sprucepaw across the clearing. He knew his son was just trying to stir him up, but he wouldn't let an insolent apprentice control his emotions. "No. Birdpaw, please demonstrate the bird hunting crough."

[Birdsong]

Birdpaw's ears flicked over to Wolfstar as he addressed her, and she quickly did as she was told, sliding easily into the bird stalking crouch. She drew the air in over her scent glands and almost immediately scented a robin nearby. For a moment forgot that she was just demonstrating, and began to follow the delicious aroma. She quickly brought herself back down to earth, however, and glanced over at the others. She was surprised to see she'd travelled unconsciously almost two entire fox-lengths away from them already. She stalked back over, unsure whether or not she was allowed to quit demonstrating.

Wolfstar gave an aproving nod. "That is how you hunt a bird. Sprucepaw, show me how you would hunt a rabbit."

[Spruceburn]

Sprucepaw pouted on the inside, he hadn't made Wolfstar angry at all... He glanced at Birdpaw, something suddenly hittting him. Was he making himself look like an idiot in front of her? Screw Wolfstar, if I can get anything out of this stupid hunting trip it'll be impressing Birdpaw! The tabby apprenitce thought to himself and then sunk into the perfect rabbit hunting crouch.

[Birdsong]

Birdpaw blinked in surprise when for once Sprucepaw actually listened to his father and slid into a perfect hunting crouch. She was privately impressed by how smoothly he glided across the ground, his muscles rippling under his tabby pelt. She glanced over at Wolfstar to see if he approved of his son's obvious knack for stalking rabbits. But she found that she didn't particularly care what Wolfstar said, if anything. She was impressed by Sprucepaw's skills, even if his father wasn't, and she was prepared to say so.
