The apprentice looked at Brindlefeather in slight shock. How dare she disrespect Doveheart?! Roseflight had to keep her fur from bristling, knowing she had to stay on-task, aiding the pained queen.
"Only to much will. Half a poppy seed won't hurt them." she muttered quietly, not caring if she was heard or not. "Doveheart knows what she's doing. If not, she wouldn't be in here helping." After that comment, Roseflight shut up, getting caught up in the nursery meham.
The first kit was about to come.

'' You're doing great Snowfur. Now just do as Doveheart and Roseflight say and things will be over before you know it, '' Coalstorm meowed encouragingly. '' Rainkit will be here soo my love. '' The black tom put his paw on top of Snowfur's in a comforting gesture to help calm her down.

It looked as though Doveheart hadn't even heard the comment maid by Brindlefeather, nor the retort by Rosefight.
"Good Coalstorm," The medicine cat murrmured, "calm her, it will make things much smoother for her."
It seemed like the words were just out of her mouth when a new sound made its way into the nursury. It was a kit, mewling quietly, but the voice was growing in volume.
The first kit had arrived.

Roseflight nipped lightly at the membrane that incased the first kit. It spilled out, and the apprentice started to lick it until it breathed on its own. She quickly moved it near the head of the kit's mother, to show her as encouragement.
"Come on Snowfur, you can do this. Just push!" she encouraged, knowing it was time to push for the next one.

Coalstorm stared lovingly at the kit like only a father could, that bundle of life there was his own child! He began to lean forward to start licking the kit but retreated as Roseflight began doing it. It was probably best to let the professionals work it out before he stepped in. When the medicine cat laid the kit next to Snowfur Coalstorm licked it lovingly then pressed himself closer to his kitting mate. '' C'mon Snowfur, you can do it. When this is all over we'll be one big happy family. '' The tom encouraged her.

She left the small she-kit to her father and went to help the little tom that had just rolled out, his membrane already broken. Roseflight paid special attention to the kits while Doveheart focused mainly on the queen. It worked better that way, so no one cat was neglected.
Already, the young tom let out a small mewl, showing his strength. The medicine cat apprentice smiled slightly, picking him up and placing him with his siter and parents. Now they had to hope for the best from the tw remaining kits that had yet to come.

"They look just like us!"She exclaimed to Coalstorm.
After awhile all the kits were born and mewling for milk.

Doveheart nodded as she gave a final check over each kit individually.
"It seems you have a healthy litter." She mewed to both cats, "Congrats."
After looking at the kits, the medicine cat looked over Snowfur's health and milk supply. All was well, so the she-cat mewed her fare well and left the nursury. There was no reason to stay, the new family was doing fine and all the queen needed now was some well deserved rest.

She looked at the kits. HER kits. She just wanted to look at them forever.

Wolfstar padded over to the fresh-kill pile. He nosed through the prey and found a plump, but not too big, mouse. He pushed into the warm, milky den to see four squirming kits suckling at Snowfur's belly. "Congradulations! They're beautiful. I brought you a mouse. Now, Coalstorm, there is some extra moss and lichen in my den. Go and soak them in water. Brindlefeather, can you guard the entrance." he meowed.

Brindlefeather acknowledged her leader's words with a nod. She slid out of the den and sat guard.

'' Instead of Featherkit, why don't we name her Cloudkit? '' he suggested to his mate. He turned his head as Wolfstar came in bringing prey for Snowfur. As much as Coalstorm didn't want to leave the den, he nodded and left the nursery. He padded over to Wolfstar's den and grabbed some moss and then went about getting them soaked. |
