Frostpaw lay on a rock, feeling about to explode. He needed to get his secrets off of his chest, but he never had enough time to tell someone. He heard a rustle from above, signifying that the bats were going to fly out into the night soon. His head hung low.
"Why?" His heart cried to be heard. "Why did this have to happen? Why can't I just be a normal cat?"

Emberpaw appeared as a shadow at the entrance of the cave. He could hear the distressed apprentice. "What is the matter, Frostpaw? Tell me, maybe I could help you. Or at least help take the stress away." the tom meowed, padding over and laying down next to his friend.

"No. I mean, yes. I mean... I don't know!" Frostpaw's outburst startled some of the bats, making them flit away. He put his head in his paws. "I-I don't know how to say it. I don't know if I can.... If I can trust...... Just leave me alone."

Emberpaw stood up in front of the tom, looking hurt. "W-why can't you trust me?" he meowed, pain in his voice. He rarely had someone say that to him and it made him sad to think that he and Frostpaw weren't friends afterall. But, then he was upset. He just needed some help. "You can trust me. Just tell me." he meowed in a clear voice.

Whisperpaw had followed Frostpaw and Emberpaw's scents to the cave. She walked inside the cave and heard their voices. She quietly walked up behind them until she couldn't see any longer. She could hear that Emberpaw was upset. "Is everything okay?" she asked. Making her presence noticed.

Emberpaw sighed. "Yeah, I'm fine. But, something is bothering Frostpaw and he wont tell me what it is. It seems to be causing him alot of pain and confusion. Everytime I ask, he avoids the answer," he meowed to the white she-cat.

Whisperpaw looked at the white tom, she couldn't really see him, but she knew he was there. She could almost feel the pain rolling off of him in waves. Then she looked back at Emberpaw. "He'll talk about in time... But maybe right now it's just too painful to talk about..." she said in a low sad voice.

Hearing Whisperpaw's words brought Frostpaw to full attentiveness. He couldn't hold himself back for a single day longer. It was now, or never.
"Maybe you're right, Whisperpaw. Maybe it isn't the right time." He padded closer to the light, his fur giving a slight shine. "But I'll never know if I don't try, will I?"

Frostpaw still hadn't adapted to being social. He didn't answer questions well. He stepped back a little.
"I-I mean that, uhh, if I don't try it, I-I'll never know if it's the right time to, uhh, come out of my shell.....?"

Frostpaw took a deep breath. He had gotten himself into this. There was no turning back.
"I-I...I don't know. The thing is, I don't......" He hesitated, doubting his own judgment for a moment. "I don't...." He stopped talking, tried to pull himself together, and frowned.
I've started talking. If I back out now, they'll bug me about it for the rest of my life. He took another deep breath, waiting for some approval of his decision.

Whisperpaw really wanted to know what secret could make a cat this upset. She tilted her head to the side as she waited for him to tell Emberpaw and herself what it was. Her eyes were big and sparkled a deep blue even though the cave had little light.

"I don't......." Frostpaw sighed. "I.....I don't believe in Starclan. There. I said it." He slunk away, his pelt invisible in the deep shadows of the room.
Silently, he praised himself for letting his secret out. Before the other cats said anything, he meowed quietly, "Thank you."
