Clayheart walked next to the river, the sound of the rushing water calmed him. He sat down next to the river, if he was out here he might as well do something useful... He looked into the water, making sure his shadow wasn't on it, and looked for the shape of small fish swimming. His eyes scanned the rippling surface and soon he spotted a fish. He waited a few moments then shot his paw into the water causing a huge splash and on the shore at Clayheart's paws appeared a fish. He gave it a quick bite to the neck and it stopped flailing and then he sent up his silent prayer of thanks, Thank you StarClan.

"You fish like a RiverClan cat." Doveheart commented, coming up to stand next to Clayheart. The medicine cat was around this part because she had been going downstream to collect a clump of water mint that grew along the banks. She had come along just in time to see the tom catch and kill the silver fish. Giving the river a glance, she backed up a tail length and padded a couple of steps before leaping over the water by stepping stones. Once on the other side, the she-cat aimed towards a clump of herbs a fox length away from her.

Sleekmask walked up to the rivers edge and saw Clayheart. "Oh sorry. I didn't know anyone else was here. I'm Sleekmask." The silver she-cat meowed walking toward him. "Nice fish."

Clayheart nodded his thanks for the medicine cat but didn't say anything and watched silently as she leaped to the other side of the river. The tom looked down at his prey with a blank expression. He was afraid that any prey he brought back could be poisoned by two-legs even though logic dictated that it wouldn't be... Clayheart was surprised when a long-haired silvery-gray she-cat approached him and introduced herself as Sleetmask, '' Nice fish, '' she commented. Clayheart was silent for a moment, looking down at his paws, '' Thanks. '' he meowed quietly to her, '' I'm Clayheart. ''

"Yeah, I know. Your nest is by mine in the warrior's den." She smiled sitting down. "So I take it you and your son are settling in well, I hope?" She glanced to where Doveheart disappeared to then she looked back at Clayheart. "Its not that bad around here. You'll adjust just fine. I'm sure."

Clayheart was quiet as Sleetmask began talking again, she seemed so nice and caring... '' Hazelpaw and I are settling in fine... '' he meowed when the she-cat had finished talking. He paused, could he confess what he was really thinking to her? Yes; something in his gut told him he could trust Sleetmask. '' Everyone here... almost everything reminds me of ForestClan. Batflight reminds me of Owlwing... Wolfstar reminds me of Bigheart... Flameclaw reminds me of Stoneclaw... Goldenpaw reminds me of Coldpaw... '' he looked up at Doveheart who was across the river, '' Doveheart reminds me of Coaleyes... '' Clayheart paused for a moment... should he go on, or was this just making everything worse? Sleetmask was the first cat he had ever opened up to, he could never tell his son these things and no other cat in the clan... they just didn't seem like Sleetmask.

Doveheart could still make out the words that were being said, but acted as if she never heard. Mouth full of the herbs, all she did was twitch her whiskers. What is it with toms and dwelling on the past? Do they never learn that it only causes more pain? She thought. Trotting back across the river, the medicine cat mearly dipped her head to the warriors before moving on.

She listened to him talk with a small smile. She really enjoyed talking with Clayheart even if he wasn't much of a talker. He seemed really well-manned and kind, and had a gentle way about him even if he didn't want it to show to anyone. "I'm glad some of the cats around here remind you of home. A sense of it, at least, even though we can't give you the whole thing." She paused for a brief second before she continued. "So who would you say I remind you of?"

Clayheart gave a flick of tail, acknowledging Doveheart's nod and then continued listening to Sleetmask, her words did do a little to comfort him. The tom flicked his ears when the she-cat asked who she reminded him of. He paused, should he say? They didn't know who she was, so it wasn't important if Sleetmask knew she reminded him of her. '' You remind me of... Hazelmask. '' he meowed quietly and then stared at his reflection in the water. If Hazelmask was watching him now, what would she think? '' I named my son after her. '' He meowed without looking away from the water.

"Oh..." Sleekmask meowed with a quiet, gentle voice. She had a feeling that this Hazelmask meant alot to Clayheart. She guess it was his former mate, but she kept it to herself. "She sounds truly lovely, Clayheart. I bet she would be really proud of you for taking care of Hazelpaw so well." She meowed.

Clayheart placed his paw gently on the surface of the water and watched as the ripples destroyed his reflection. '' She was truly brilliant... '' he whispered as memories of his late mate raced back into his mind. '' I wish I could have saved her... '' he turned and smiled at Sleetmask, something he rarely did when he wasn't around his son, '' But I think she wants me to move on... but it's so hard... and soon Hazelpaw will begin asking questions... ''

"Yeah, trying to move on when someone is gone is a very hard thing, but remember something. 'History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again'." Sleekmask returned his smile. "I think you and Hazelpaw will be fine."

'' Wow... '' Clayheart whispered at Sleetmask's words. '' You... You're right. I can't undo the past, but I can be in the present and I can be there for my son even if I coulnd't have been for Hazelmask. '' The tom shifted himself so he was closer to Sleetmask, '' So many cats have said things to me... but yours have made the most sense. ''

"I'm proud to be here with you and make you feel better." Sleekmask smiled, but then when Clayheart moved close to her she became tensed. She wasn't used to this warm feeling toward someone other than family. "I-I should go...I promised Gladepaw we would do something together." She got to her paws. "Good luck." She meowed walking away toward camp. She didn't want to leave, but felt she was going to ruin their new relationship if she didn't.

'' I could show you how to fi-... '' Clayheart trailed off as Sleetmask got to her paws, saying she had to go train Gladepaw. The tom watched her walk away, maybe it was for the best not to get in another relationship like the obvious one that he and Sleetmask would get into. Clayheart sighed to himself and picked up his fish in his jaws and headed back to camp.
