Lets Try and Fish

[Spruceburn]

Sprucepaw sat by the river, glaring down at the rippling water with his bright green eyes narrowed in concentration. He had seen Clayheart do this once before and he was wondering how the warrior had managed to catch the slippery little fish. Sprucepaw saw a little shadow under the water's surface and he practically dove into the water in his anxiousness to catch the fish. Splashing water everywhere, the tom cursed rapidly under his breath as he made his way out of the river. '' Mouse-brain! '' he scolded himself.

[Birdsong]

Birdsong padded along the river, her eyes cast at the ground before her paws. She'd been on several hunting trips and had just gotten off a patrol, and her thoughts went longingly to her soft warm nest in the Warriors' Den. She was jerked unpleasantly awake by a loud splash and sprinted down the bank until she came upon Sprucepaw, crawling back out of the river. She blinked in surprise at finding him here, but then shook away her shock and purred in both greeting and amusement.

"Decided to go for a little swim, did we?" she mewed playfully, sitting down and curling her tail over her paws. As Sprucepaw tried vainly to shake the water from his tabby pelt she asked more seriously, "What were you doing?"

Sprucepaw flushed under his pelt as he saw Birdsong, Great StarClan, she really had to come at this time? He thought bitterly to himself as water dripped from his whiskers. The young tom was thinking of a smart remark but Birdsong cut him off, '' What were you doing? '' the warrior asked him. '' If you must know, I was trying to fish. '' He meowed as he drew himself to his full height so he wouldn't look so pathetic sitting there dripping wet. '' What're you doing out here? '' he asked her.

Just a few fox lengths away, Featherheart was fishing and had a large pile.
"Hey! Sprucepaw I can teach you to fish!"
She yelled.

[Birdsong]

Birdsong's ears pricked curiously. "Fishing?" she purred, intrigued. It was then that Featherheart called over to them, offering to teach Sprucepaw to fish. "Could I learn too?"

[Spruceburn]

Sprucepaw turned as he heard Featherheart calling to them, offering to teach them how to fish. Don't flinch... The tom told himself as the she-cat's mutilated face came into view. Luckily he didn't, so this lesson would not have to be an awkward one. '' Yeah Featherheart, that would be great. I saw Clayheart doing it once and I thought it looked easy, '' he paused for a moment looking at his wet paws, '' but obviously I learned it isn't that hard way. '' Sprucepaw turned to Birdsong and smiled, '' You fish? Don't make me laugh! '' he teased the she-cat playfully.

[Birdsong]

"I tried it once," Birdsong answered Sprucepaw's question nonchalantly. She then added a little sheepishly, "I was pretty terrible. Some lessons couldn't hurt." Her green eyes flicked over Sprucepaw's wet pelt. "My pelt was drenched totally through. At least you actually managed to stay on your paws!" she mewed teasingly.

"I can actually catch a fish or two."
She said calmly.
"The trick is to keep your shadow off the water and go for it before its right here. Watch and learn." She said. She waited patiently for the flicker of scales up river, dived her front paws in and brought out a large fish.
"Just takes practice."

[Spruceburn]

Sprucepaw watched the warrior, his gaze unblinking, he didn't want to miss a thing. The shadow of a rather large fish moved under the surface, getting very close to the waiting warrior. Suddenly Featherheart shot her paw into the water, '' You were to early- '' he began saying, obviously not hearing what she had said before, as he watched the fish land at her paws. '' Whoa, that was awesome! '' The apprentice meowed excitedly. He had never seen a cat catch a fish up close before, it was amazing!

[Birdsong]

Birdsong nodded in fervent agreement with Sprucepaw. Featherheart's display had been amazing. Figuring she'd give it a shot, the tawny she-cat stepped up to the water's edge and peered in, being sure to keep her shadow off the surface. When another fish appeared, Birdsong prepared herself to catch it. When it was where she wanted it, she lashed out with one paw.

As she tried to pull it out however, it began sliding back down the rocks. She lunged forward to grab it with her teeth, but then was suddenly launched into the water when the fish flipped away at the last second. Birdsong scrambled back onto the shore, soaked to the skin with water streaming off her pelt and dripping from her whiskers. She looked over her drenched coat for a moment, but then shrugged and went back to the water's edge to try again. If she was already wet, she might as well keep trying until she actually caught a fish.

Featherheart tried her hardest to hold in a giggle, but burst out in laughter.
"I'm sorry it's just the look on your face when you went in the water was HILARIOUS!"
She said rolling on the ground laughing.

Sprucepaw snorted with laughter as Birdsong fell into the water, it was hard to believe he had looked like that only a few moments ago. He turned his head curiously as Featherheart began laughing hysterically, was it really that funny? The sight of the warrior rolling on the ground laughing was enough to get him laughing too though. The young tom found himself on the ground too, laughing so hard he was almost out of breath. He wasn't even sure what he was laughing at. Was it Featherheart's sudden burst of laughter? Was it Birdsong falling into the river? Or was it the fact that he had fallen into the river too?

[Birdsong]

Birdsong looked over at the two hysterical cats and snorted a laugh. "Oh, bite me," she purred, narrowing her eyes and pretending to be annoyed. She used one paw to swat some water at them. "You two'll scare away all the fish with all that caterwauling!" she laughed. They didn't seem to hear her, still rolling on the ground. She was tempted to go over and smack both of them to get them off the ground again, but it had been a while since she'd heard such a happy, carefree sound that she just smiled and glanced back at the water in case any other fish came by.

"Okay, okay lets get back to fishing."
Featherheart said, after catching her breath.
"So, it also helps if you let you back claws hold you on the ground, but close enough to the river you can catch the fish. See you dig in to a spot like... here and no more drenched fur!"
She said as she demonstrated how she had a firm hold.

Sprucepaw took a moment to catch his breath too, and then got back to business. He sat next to Birdsong, trying to imitate that hold Featherheart hard on the ground with his back claws. '' Like this? '' he asked the warrior.
